Milwaukee County parks offer family fun activities

Milwaukee County Parks, regarded as one of the finest park systems in America, offers a multitude of activities for all ages. This is great news for families who can get out of the house and enjoy some fun times for a low cost.

Get wet

Milwaukee County operates a large number and variety of water-based recreation facilities and five beaches. Pool facilities include two indoor pools that operate year round, outdoor family waterparks like Cool Waters & Pelican Cove, outdoor pools, and water playgrounds and wading pools. All come with different facilities and admission prices, but all offer convenient, low-cost family entertainment. The best part is that the water playgrounds and wading pools are free! Beaches are also free and offer opportunities for swimming, sand-castle building, beach volleyball, and more! Bradford Beach is the most popular beach and the only one to offer lifeguards.

Go to the zoo

Milwaukee County Zoo offers views of multitudes of animals from around the world, including flamingos, penguins, and big cats, in natural surroundings that are mainly separated from each other by hidden moats rather than fences, as well as live animal shows. For families with children, the zoo offers a petting zoo, interactive exhibits, camel & pony rides, a carousel, and a kids play area. While the outdoors may be most comfortable in summer, the zoo is open year round! Visitors are also allowed to carry in their own food, keeping costs lower for families.

Up close & personal with indoor plants

The Mitchell Park Horticultural Conservatory (aka “The Domes”) are three large glass domes that offer seasonal floral displays, plants from southwest Africa, and tropical plants, including orchids, in a tropical environment that includes orchids. Since they are open year round, it can be a great place to take the kids when winter is wearing a little thin, plus there is a spectacular light show every evening before closing!

Hike & bike

The park system offers many miles of trails through designated trails as well as trails connected to various nature centers. Trails are offered that are suitable for the shortest of legs up to more challenging projects. For example, the Oak Leaf Recreation Trail offers 90 miles of hiking & biking trails that connect all the major Milwaukee County parks. During the winter, some trails are also available for cross country skiing.

Take photos

The landscapes in many county parks offer beautiful backgrounds for taking family photos. Bring a friend, a camera, and take your own beautiful photos rather than paying a studio for them.

Family gatherings

Hold a family reunion, birthday party, wedding, or other family gathering. Many of the facilities in the Milwaukee county park system are available for rental. This can allow families to host larger gatherings or simply take some of the work out of hosting a gathering. Many facilities include built in fun & recreation options!

There’s lots to do through the Milwaukee County Park System, both summer and winter! This local gem offers residents many opportunities to get out and enjoy time with family.
