Ballard is a neighborhood in Seattle, Washington. It is located northwest of downtown. It is east of Puget Sound, north of Lake Washington Ship Canal. There are several other neighborhoods that are part of what is referred to as the Ballard District including Woodland and Sunset Hill. The neighborhood includes the Ballard Avenue Historic District which is the center of Scandinavian culture in the city. Many of the immigrants came to Ballard from Scandinavia to work in the shingle mills that were important to the growth of this area. For a community that is over 150 years old, Ballard is very hip and modern and there are many locally owned shops and restaurants in the area. It was incorporated into the city of Seattle in 1907 but it still retains its small town feel.

Ballard is a residential neighborhood that also has plenty of commercial areas. It is very highly regarded when it comes to deciding where to live in Seattle. The median home price in the area is $399,000. Single family homes predominate but there are also apartments, condos, townhouses and multi-families. There are lots of bungalow style homes for sale.

Located in the Ballard neighborhood,  the 87 acre Golden Gardens Park  offers some of the best views of both Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains in the area.  The park was created to encourage city dwellers to come out to the beach which was at the end of the trolley line. Today the park still offers beach access, an off leash dog area, plenty of trails, a play area and picnic tables.  

Ballard Locks are a big attraction in this area. They serve a useful purpose in maintaining the water level in Lake Union and Lake Washington. They are also the site of a variety of concerts every summer.

The Second Saturday Art Walk is a big attraction in Ballard. People come from all over Seattle to check out art work that is shown in local shops and businesses. To find out what will be offered, check out the Ballard Chamber of Commerce website.

Ballard Pool  is a public facility that is open year round. The pool is indoors and offers lots of opportunities to enjoy the water for children and adults. There are lap lanes but also a water slide. Swimming classes are offered for tots and children and aerobics and exercise for adults. It is a great addition to this neighborhood and is part of the Seattle Park and Rec.  

Ballard High School  is located in this area and is one of the highest performing schools in Seattle according to GreatSchools. Based on standardized state test for 2010/11 they have earned a distinguished 9/10.

Domanico Cellars is located in Ballard’s Warehouse District. They are the first ever winery in the area. Their tasting room is open Wednesday, Friday and Saturday and by special appointment.

There is almost always something fun going on in the Ballard neighborhood. It is a great place to visit and even better to live in.
