Easter egg hunts in the DC area

The Washington, D.C. area has so many wonderful special events during the springtime.  For those looking for an Easter egg hunt for the kids, the most difficult part will be how to choose between the many enticing options.

Washington, D.C.

The most well known egg hunt in the area will be the White House Easter Egg Roll.  This holiday tradition was started in 1878 by President Rutherford B. Hayes and continues to this day.  Tickets are distributed based on an online lottery; thus allowing those from around the country a chance to attend.

Tudor Place, a 5 acre estate originally owned by the granddaughter of Martha Washington, holds an Eggstravaganza each year.  This wonderful event located at this National Historic Landmark boasts games, egg decorating, and pictures with the Easter Bunny in addition to the egg hunt. 

The National Zoo holds an annual African American Family Celebration each year on the Monday after Easter.  This wonderful event features fun Easter activities including an egg hunt, live entertainment, a visit from the Easter bunny, and more.


Butler’s Orchard, a pick your own produce farm in Germantown, hosts an annual Bunnyland Festival every April.  Families can enjoy an egg hunt, hayride, and a visit with real bunnies in addition to other fun activities.

Meadowside Nature Center, located in Rockville, has an annual Easter egg hunt in addition to many other great fun and educational programs throughout the year.  This Easter event includes a hunt for real eggs, which the kids then get to dye before enjoying other fun springtime activities.

The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore boasts a wonderful Easter event that includes an egg hunt, crafts, games, entertainment, etc.  Parking is free and the entertainment and egg hunt are also free with paid admission to the zoo.


Morven Park is a National Register Historic Property in Leesburg which contains three museums in addition to an equestrian center, beautiful gardens, hiking trails, and more.  This former home of Virginia Governor Westmoreland Davis holds an Eco-Friendly Easter event featuring natural egg dyeing, real bunnies, an egg roll, and even basket making.

Families will find another remarkable Easter event in Leesburg at Dodona Manor.  Children will have lots of fun participating in an egg hunt, having their faces painted, going on scavenger hunts, and decorating eggs, along with other exciting activities.

Reston Zoo in Vienna is another zoo that offers a fun-filled Easter event.  Families will have the opportunity to enjoy an egg hunt in addition to meeting baby bunnies and even feeding a lamb.  Face painting and a meeting with the Easter bunny are also part of this great family event.

No matter which exciting event a family chooses; everyone is sure to have a great time at any of these wonderful egg hunts in Washington, D.C. and the surrounding area.
