Buffalo Bayou is one of the Neighborhood Features

Magnolia Park is a neighborhood in Houston, Texas. It is located to the southeast of downtown. Buffalo Bayou runs through this neighborhood and adds a lot of interest and entertainment options. Whether it is canoeing or kayaking, the bayou is the place to go. Buffalo Bayou also provides the northern border of this neighborhood, railroad tracks the west, Mason Park and Gus Wortham Golf Court the south and Brays Bayou the east. This is a historic neighborhood that today is largely Hispanic. There are many organizations in the neighborhood that celebrate the Mexican origins of many of the residents. The neighborhood was named after the many magnolias that were planted here by developers.

As a working class neighborhood there are many affordable homes in this area. Prices for single family homes start below $50,000 and go to over $200,000. Many homes were built in the 1930’s in the bungalow style. Many homes are single family but there are also multi-family and apartments.

Residents have choices when it comes to schools. Gallegos Elementary School, De Zavala Elementary School, Tijerina Elementary School and Edison Middle School are all located within the neighborhood.

DeZavala Park  is located in the neighborhood. It has a great children’s playground, basketball courts, sports fields and a swimming pool. There is also a community center which offers a variety of activities and can also be rented for private family or community events.

Hidalgo Park  is located on the Turning Basin and is a favorite park with residents from all over Houston. It is the location of one of the city parks water features that kids enjoy on a hot summer’s day. There are plenty of benches to sit and enjoy, a ball field,  a great wooden playground and a gazebo.

The Harrisburg and Sunset Rail Trails  runs through this neighborhood as it wends its way for five miles. It is a ten feet wide lighted asphalt trail that can be used by cyclists and pedestrians.  

The neighborhood has a variety of religious institutions including Joy Fellowship Temple, Pentecoste Temple La Rosa, Immaculate Heart of Mary Church and Immaculate Conception Catholic Churches.  

Magnolia Park has a neighborhood library, the Stanaker Library. It is part of the Houston Library System and offers computers and Internet access to residents of all ages. It is closed for renovations from summer 2011 to fall 2012.

Gus Wortham Park Golf Course is adjacent to the neighborhood. It is a public golf course that offers 18 holes of challenging golf. There is a snack bar, pro shop and driving range.

Magnolia Park is one of the most affordable neighborhoods in Houston and has plenty to offer residents including easy commuting into downtown, plenty of stores and restaurants and even the Houston Police Station within its borders.
