Autumn Fun in Florence South Carolina

Florence, South Carolina is in the area of South Carolina known as the Pee Dee Region.  It was named for the daughter of General William W.Harllee.  The city was founded as a railroad town and he was the president of the Wilmington and Manchester Railroad. Known as a thriving business community  and a friendly place to live, there are lots of things to do in Florence in any season and fall is no exception. Here are a few things that will be of interest to residents as well as visitors.

The Chamber of Commerce sponsors two golf tournaments a year. One is in the spring and one is in the fall. The fall tournament takes place the first week of October at The Traces Golf Course. It is a great way to meet people and make business connections.

As the weather starts to cool down, residents know that it is time for the Pee Dee Fall Plant and Flower Festival.   Located at the State Farmers Market on West Lucas Street. In 2011, the dates are September 30-October 2. Friday and Saturday the festival is open 8am to 6pm and on Sunday from noon to 5pm. The festival usually has at least one day on the month of October. Expect to see boringly fall colored flowers, pumpkin, fall themed decorations as well as tasty fall treats.  There is also a spring plant and flower festival in April each year. People come from all over the state to attend these two events.

The largest event every year in Florence is the East Carolina Agricultural Fair.  It brings crowds of people to the fair grounds for 11 days on October. It is an old fashioned agricultural fair where you will find all the livestock judging, 4H projects and local women bringing out their canned fruits and vegetables. There is a full midway with lots of exciting rides and games of chance. There is a full schedule of entertainment for family members of all ages. There will be lots of vendors selling a variety of goods including crafts and other items of interest. Tickets are available in a variety of configurations with advance tickets being for sale online. It promises to be a great time for everyone with lots to do and see for residents and visitors of all ages.

From November 26th through January 4th the Eastern Carolina Agricultural Fair Grounds are transformed into a magical village. Santa’s Magical Village to be exact. Grab the kids, fill up the car and drive through this magical wonderland of lights. In addition to the mile long display of lights there is a petting zoo for the kids, amusement rides and the chance to meet Santa. It’s a great way to spend some family time together in the holiday season.

These are just a few of the things that are available to do in Florence, South Carolina in the fall. It is easy to see why this is such a popular place to both live and visit.
