What to do in Coos Bay in the Wintertime

Coos Bay is often thought of as a delightful place to be in the summer, however not too many people think of all the fun that can be enjoyed in the winter, here. In fact, it is a great time to avoid the crowds that are often around during the warmer months. Part of the key is that while the coast may be rainy in the winter, the temperatures are usually mild.

The beach

The beach is still there in the winter, as it is in the summer. At times, there are high surf warnings in effect and the beaches are closed. However, when they aren’t closed, it can be a blast to walk along the uncrowded beach looking for interesting objects that have been washed up on the shore by the storms.

Crabbing and fishing

Crab season opens in mid December. People can use the wintertime to bring in plenty of crabs. This is something many people find to be enjoyable, and the result is great tasting. The Coos Bay area is one of the most well known places for catching dungeness crabs, so this is a great time to take advantage of it. A person can also do a bit of fishing in the winter, usually with pretty good results. In February, there is also a crab feed in Charlston.

Light festival

Winter is the time of year to see the wondrous spectacle of the festival of lights. This is nearly guaranteed to wow the people who see it. The artistically done light displays features over 350,000 colored lights, skillfully set up in a horticultural area. Some of these lights are on animated displays. The display runs from just after Thanksgiving until just after New Years. On many nights, there is also live music in this location.

Whale watching

The early winter is when gray whales can be viewed. It is a wonderful event to share with friends and families, to watch these huge and majestic mammals as they migrate up the coast. This is a fun and educational way to appreciate the Oregon coast. There is also a program put on at Shore Acres State Park to teach people more about the whale migration and about these animals.

Mill Casino

The Mill Casino is a lot more than a place to gamble, though for some, this can be a fun and enjoyable way to spend many hours in the winter. It can even be profitable. Mills also hosts many events, year around. A person doesn’t even need to go anywhere when they get hungry. The restaurants at Mill Casino have some of the tastiest and best cooked cuisine to be found on the southern Oregon coast.

There might be a tendency for people to think of Coos Bay as a place where the fun is limited to only the late spring, summer and early fall. The truth is that there is a lot to do here in the fall. This is a coastal town where the fun simply doesn’t stop. The above is only a portion of what is available in the winter in the Coos Bay/North Bend area.
