Oklahoma City Myriad Botanical Gardens

My last stop in a recent visit to Oklahoma City was to the Myriad Botanical Gardens. Located in the heart of downtown Oklahoma City, I have to say that I never knew that such a breathtaking paradise existed in Oklahoma! The Myriad Botanical Gardens is 17 acres of colorful, luscious gardens surrounding the Crystal Bridge Tropical Conservatory.

The main highlight of the gardens is the 224 foot long Conservatory. First of all, it looks amazing! With towering palms trees, exotic plants, and beautiful water falls, it is a lot to take in. Not to mention the plants in the Conservatory which are truly breathtaking. There are over 1,000 species of plants in the Crystal Bridge Tropical Conservatory. There are plants from every continent except Antarctica. The plants in the Conservatory are separated into two areas. On the south end of the Conservatory is The Tropical Rain Forest Zone, called the Wet Mountain. The amazing plants displayed here are from Amazonia, Central Africa, Southeast Asia and the South Pacific Islands where rain falls year-round. On the north end of the Conservatory is The Dry Tropical Zone, called the Dry Mountain. These plants are put through a drought from November to March, and then watered regularly through the summer. Most of these plants come from South Africa, Madagascar and Mexico.

Out of all the beautiful plants throughout the gardens there are some that stood out the most. In the northeast corner of the Myriad Botanical Gardens is the Meinders Garden. Some of the most outstanding perennials and flowering shrubs for Oklahoma can be found there. Then there is the orchids which are found abundantly in the Wet Mountain. They are well known for their beauty. Dozens of different varieties of orchids can be seen blooming there. The cycads, which go all the way back to the time of the dinosaur, can be found in the gardens. Cycads are usually located in Mexico and South Africa. The bromeliads are one of my favorite. They are very unique plants that are brightly colored and actually have a pool of water in the center of the funnel shaped plant.

The last big highlight of the day at the Myriad Botanical Gardens was the Crystal Bridge Gift Shop. There is a big selection of nature related items. There are decorations for your garden and for inside your home. You can even find skin care products there from Crab Tree and Evelyn. There is nature related toys for the kids as well. All around fun, educational experience.
