Fall family fun in the Albany, New York area

There are many attractions in Albany, New York. These consist of those that are family-friendly and those that are not. For the purpose of this article, the focus will be on family friendly attractions in and around Albany, NY in the fall. 

There are several places that can be enjoyed all year round. Crossgates mall not only provides a day of family fun through shopping and eating out, it host centers of activities conducive to family fun. It is the home of Regal Cinemas, in which you can often find a family movie to sit back and laugh together. The mall is also the home of the Battlefield Live Laser Tag which is used for family or other group outings. The Battlefield Laser Tag is a popular host of birthday parties among older kids and teens. There is also the New York State museum located in Albany.  It is educational and entertaining, a place where history comes to life. There is also the attraction of theaters and seasonal festivals.

However to really enjoy the beauty and history of Albany, New York, in the fall, one must go outside. The beauty of the fall foliage is breath taking. The weather is perfect for outdoor activities. Within Albany itself are a number of outdoor activities including a fun and educational ecosystem at Albany Pine Bush Preserve Commission, outdoor shopping at Farmer’s Markets located at the Empire State Plaza, and for a fun-filled day of family activities, there is the Washington Park. The Washington Park is great for enjoying historical monuments, children’s playgrounds, picnicking, fishing, tennis courts and bike paths.

To take in some of the most beautiful parts of upstate New York, step just outside of Albany and relish the beauty, friendly atmosphere, tranquility, and family-focused activities of the outer villages surrounding Albany, New York.  One of the most rewarding trips will be to Altamont, New York. A highly recommended place is Indian Ladder Farms located at 342 Altamont Rd. This place is perfect for family picnics, nature trails, pumpkin and apple picking, and visiting with the farm animals. Altamont is also home to the Altamont Fair Grounds which host many events through the year. Fall 2012 will include the Fall Antique Show, apple festivals, and the Color Me Rad 5K run. Next, one should take a drive over to Cobleskill, New York. Golding Park Café in Cobleskill is a popular attraction, with picnic areas for the family, it is an alcohol free environment. Coffee and tea are available and the main attraction is its outdoor concerts.

Another popular Cobleskill attraction that is even more fun to visit in the fall is Howe Caverns.  Howe Caverns is located at 255 Discovery Drive in Howes Cave, NY.  It features several different cave tours that go as much as 156 ft. below ground, as well as offers above ground hiking, biking, dining, gem stone panning, and a museum.  Tickets run from $12 to $23.  With the purchase of extra tickets one can take part in zip lining, air jumping, and rock wall climbing.  Next one needs to scurry on over to Middleburgh, New York. One of the most loved attractions by the locals in the Albany area is Vroman’s Nose in Middleburgh. Vroman’s Nose offers fun and exercise with its hiking adventures. It was purchased by Adam Vroman in the 1800’s from the Schoharie Indians.  The top of the mountain was cleared shortly after the purchase and used by the locals for square dancing. Today, it is popular for its annual fall hike.  Although the entire Albany area is popular for its pumpkin patches, one of the most loved is the “Pick a Pumpkin” Pumpkin Patch.  Admission is free but there is a charge for school trips for each child, while adult admission remains free. This pumpkin patch has many activities including a corn maze, 3-story tree house, petting zoo, and gift shop.  There is a hay ride into the pumpkin field to pick a pumpkin for purchase and a little café for snacks or meal.  The pumpkin patch is only open for the month of October, so if one is in the area during this month, it would be well worth the trip for a day of family play and relaxation.

The great tourist attraction of New York is New York City; however, one can not fully experience New York until having experienced Albany and its surrounding areas in the fall.
