Things to do with your Kids on a Rainy Day in Albuquerque

Rainy days are often the hardest days for children since they have to be cooped up in the house. They are often bored and whiny, complaining there is nothing for them to do. Why not bundle them up and take them out to visit one of the following places?

Explora Science and Children’s Museum

Explora is a hands-on museum for children and adults. You can explore art, science, culture and technology while having fun. There are over 250 interactive science and art exhibits such as an experiment bar, a high wire bike, and robotics lab. Another area in Explora is where you can go and explore sound. You will be able to feel it and see it! There are also a variety of programs happening during the day.

The Albuquerque Aquarium

Albuquerque’s Aquarium is a very nice place to go and visit if you don’t have much time. When you purchase your tickets they will also come with a pass so you can visit the botanical gardens that are right next to the aquarium.

When you walk into the Albuquerque Aquarium get ready to go on a tour. The tour will take you down the Rio Grande beginning in Albuquerque all the way to its mouth in the Gulf of Mexico. They have an eel tunnel, seahorses, luminous jellyfish and a 285,000 gallon ocean tank. You can see all kinds of ocean creatures, such as a sand-tiger, a black-tip and nose sharks in the tank. You may also see some reef fish and sea turtles.

Every day divers from the aquarium go into the shark tank to feed the sharks and clean the tank. This happens between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m., so don’t miss it! They have chairs where you may sit and watch.

Even though it only takes about 30 minutes to an hour to go through the aquarium, the children will learn many things about the different types of fish and other ocean creatures. It is a perfect way to entertain your children for a short time on a rainy day in Albuquerque.

The Balloon Museum

The Balloon Museum is where your children will learn everything about balloons. It is open Tuesdays through Sundays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. They are closed on Mondays and holidays. If you go on the first Friday of every month or on Sundays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., admission is free.

Every Wednesday from 9:30 to 10:15 there is a special time for children from 6 months up to 6 years of age where they can enjoy hearing a story, playing games, singing songs and doing a craft. Don’t let your younger children miss this event!

The Balloon Museum has many famous balloons on display; Japanese balloon outfits, balloons that the Germans used in the war, balloons from the 18th century and many more.
