Dixie National Livestock Show Jackson Mississippi

If you visit Jackson, Mississippi at any time from mid-January to mid-February of each year, you will be just in time for the Dixie National Livestock Show. This annual event runs for 24 days and takes place at the Mississippi State Fairgrounds. It is the prime opportunity to see champion cowboys showing off their rodeo skills as they compete for large prizes. Bullfighting, barrel-racing and clowns are just some of the performers taking to the ring during this event of the year.

Each day of the rodeo offers visitors the chance to take in a variety of entertainment with concerts by well-known singers and bands from all over the country and indeed from all over the world. Livestock shows are also daily events where there are fierce competitions among the contestants for the prestigious winner of the best breeds of stockdogs, beef grooming, and horse shows. Stunning horses take the limelight in the Southern Classic Horse Sale.

The rodeo segment of the Dixie National Livestock Show takes place in the coliseum and there are ten events in all. With seating for 6500 people, there is plenty of room to take in the events of your choice or even all of them if you wish. The show starts with a parade, as do most events of this nature. This is a colourful affair as the participants make their way down College Street in the city and consists of wagon trains, riders and more that everyone watching will thoroughly enjoy. The streets are lined with spectators as they get a glimpse of what to expect when the events actually begin.

Contenders also vie for the title of Rodeo Queen in the Dixie National Livestock Show Rodeo Queen Pageant. Here young ladies show off their talents for the chance to be crowned queen of the show for the next year.

The Great Chilli Round- up is a fun event of the show and is the best place in town to take in the scent and taste of chilli as part of the Dixie National Livestock Show.

People from all over the southern states converge on Jackson, Mississippi for this event. It is the largest livestock show of the year. Once the growers compete in the various contests the winners in the horse and cattle shows are auctioned off to the highest bidders. Even if you don’t intend to make a purchase, being present at the auction is an experience on its own. This is the one time of the year when you will think you are in the Old West as a visitor to the city.
