Worcester has many Catholic churches

Worcester, Massachusetts is a working class town with a long and historic past. It is home to the 10 colleges and universities including University of Massachusetts Medical School, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, College of the Holy Cross, Clark University, Assumption College, the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences and Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine.  Worcester has received the All-American City Award  five times. It is a great place to live and work and has a diverse and eclectic population. With a population of over 180,000, there are a wide variety of religious institutions to serve the needs of the citizens of the city.

The city of Worcester is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Worcester. There are over 20 parish churches and missions in this city and if you are looking for a parish to join, there is most certainly one that is located nearby. With the diverse ethnic population of the city,   some of the parishes were begun to fulfill the needs of these groups.

The Parish of Blessed Sacrament is celebrating its one hundredth anniversary in 2012.  Located on Pleasant Street near Elm Park,there are a variety of ministries that will appeal to every member of the family including a children’s choir as well as a children’s chime choir.  To find out what is currently go on, check the parish weekly bulletin. 

Another Parish located on Pleasant Street is Christ the King. Founded in 1936, it is located in the Tatnuck neighborhood of Worcester. This is a large with over 1600 families and over 400 children who are involved in the religious education program. Their parish website has a section to welcome people new to the area. It offers practical information about Worcester and services in the area. With over 35 different ministries offered, if you want to become involved, there are plenty of opportunities.

Immaculate Conception Parish is celebrating 50 years in 2012.  It is located on Grove Street several miles northwest of downtown and within an easy drive of Assumption College.  The parish has a Rosary Prayer Group and the rosary is offered in the church on Monday-Thursday mornings.

Located in South Worcester, Sacred Heart of Jesus-St. Catherine of Sweden Parish is a parish that was created from two parishes. Sacred Heart has been around a long time, over 125 years and in the current economic climate it became necessary to combine the parishes which have both served the area into one stronger parish.  It has been a good merger, the parish is thriving and offers a Ladies Guild, a Men’s Group, a Bible Study Group, a Youth Group, as well as an Adult and Youth Choir. The parish also offer Bingo so if you are looking for a parish with lots going on, this might just be the one for you.
