Fun at the Science Center of Iowa Des Moines Ia

The Science Center of Iowa offers 110,000 square feet of opportunities to discover and experiment. As soon as you walk through the doors, the excitement grabs you and takes you on the ride of a lifetime.

There are seven themed experience platforms with hands-on activities to get you thinking. A great place to start is with the “Science is Where You Find It” platform. This platform takes you through everyday science that surrounds you. You may not realize all the fun you can have with Kitchen Chemistry or Bathroom Microbiology. These activities are only a start to the amazement you’ll feel as you realize more about the world around you.

For the doers in the household, the “When Things Get Moving” platform will surely catch their attention. The current theme is Toying with Science. Whether you enjoy the idea of a domino obstacle course or prefer building and launching your own rocket, there are plenty of hands-on activities that will make you laugh while you learn.

“Who Are We?” is a platform that helps people understand everyone is different. Whether it is someone from another country or a different cultural background, or even someone from the other side of the country, these exhibits will hit home. Activities like Heart Beats or In Your Genes give you a chance to learn more about yourself and others.

Future astronomers will enjoy a ride through the galaxy with the “Why the Sky?” platform. Activities from the Black Hole Visualizer to building your own telescope will take you out of this world. Near this platform, you’ll find the Star Theater, which offers unique planetarium shows on a 50-foot dome.

If you have children who are seven and younger, they will enjoy the “Small Discoveries” platform. This is a great area for them to run around in with Toddler Town and Ball Play. You’ll have to drag your youngster out of Bubble Bay at the end of the day.

“What on Earth?” is a platform that actually re-creates the Iowa landscape. Here you can discover caving and climbing as well as digging. From testing minerals to classifying plants, animals, and fossils to taking part in the Ant Farm activities, you will really learn about the area around you. It’s even near the WHO-TV Weather Studio, where meteorologists are available to give live programs several times a week.

Last but not least, you will come across the Principal Hall. This area is ever changing as it hosts traveling exhibits and science fairs, among other events. From the exhibits, you may want to check out the Blank IMAX Dome Theater, which gives you a view on a six-story domed screen. Watch any film come to life in this theater. If the IMAX is a little much for you, you can also catch demonstrations and live performances at the John Deere Adventure Theater.
