Chicago Transportation System

From a visitors point of view , the Chicago public transportation system is very impressive. It is fast, efficient and easy to understand. Getting in from the airport was effortless and cheap.

Chicago public transportation consists of buses and a train system that is referred to as the “L”. It is easy to get from one side of the city to the other on this very efficient system. What I really liked was that they have a website that will plan your trip for you. All you need to do is to put in your starting destination and your ending destination and the site will tell you exactly how to get there, the transfers you will need to do, it even gives you the expected times for the bus and the “L”. It is amazing; it takes the fear of learning a new public transit system out of the equation for a new resident or a visitor.

CTA trains run on eight color coded routes. The orange line is the Midway airport loop. The blue line runs to Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport into downtown Chicago. It can be accessed by tunnels from terminal one, two and three. The station is location on the lower level of the parking garage.

From these two trains travelers to Chicago can connect with other trains and buses to get to almost anywhere in Chicago that they want to go.

Chicago has not only one of the least expensive public transportation systems in the United States it also has one of the easiest to navigate. A single ride on the “L” or on a city bus is $2.25 if you use cash or $2 for the bus if you use your Chicago card, you can purchase an all day pass for $5.75. This is a great deal, especially if you arrive in Chicago at Midway or O’Hare Airport . A regular pass will get you into the city. If you are going to be visiting for 3 days there is a three day pass for $14 and a 7 day pass for $23. If you are moving to Chicago then you will want to use a Chicago card which you purchase for $5 then preload from your credit or debit card. There are also passes that are good for 30 days if you are going to be visiting for longer.

You can purchase the passes at designated locations and in some of the transit machines. Before you begin your trip around the city of Chicago print yourself a copy of the system map, it will tell you where the transfer points are between the different lines in the system. The Transit system maps will not only give you all the information you need about all the “L” and bus lines but it will also give you plenty of tourist information so that you won’t miss a single thing on your visit to Chicago.

Without a doubt , part of Chicago’s charm consists in walking it’s streets and cruising on it’s river and lake. while these are not public transportation, the public uses and enjoys both methods of getting around.
