The Museums of Wilmington Delaware

The city of Wilmington is located in the Brandywine Valley, New Castle County, Delaware, United States. The thriving city offers visitors a wide range of recreational and cultural activities including a number of interesting museums.

Delaware History Museum

Situated in Market Square, the Delaware History Museum presents a varied collection of historic pieces that are associated with people from the area. Exhibits include a Revolutionary War Flag, a chair owned by George Washington, silverware, clocks and ceramics.  The museum is open Monday to Saturday.

The Delaware Natural History Museum

The small but interesting Natural History Museum is located in Kennett Pike in the city’s northern suburbs. The museum’s permanent exhibitions include a Dinosaur Gallery, Hall of Birds, Butterfly Darden and the Darwin and Evolution exhibit. The museum also provides changing exhibitions for example Earth from Space and Rainforest Sdventure. Open times are from Monday to Sunday.

Children’s Museum

The children’s museum is aimed at children between the ages of one to ten years of age and provides a number of interactive exhibits to help children learn whilst they play. One of the great attractions in the museum is the large pirate ship with working cannons, where children can dress in pirate’s costumes, swab the deck with child sized mops, fire cannon balls and dig for treasure. Other fun exhibits include a play grocery store, imaginary circus and teddy bear hospital. The museum is located at 116 Orange Street and is open Monday to Sunday.

The Hagley Museum

The Hagley Museum is located in two hundred and thirty five acres of land on the banks of the Brandywine River. The estate shows the restored home and gunpowder works belonging to the DuPont family during the 1800’s. Today visitors can tour the impressive house, machine shops, mills, steam engine room, workers accommodation and grounds to gain a real sense of the dangers of the gunpowder industry and the life of the DuPont’s and their workers. The museum is open daily from 9.30 to 4.30pm.

Delaware Art Museum

2301 Kentware Parkway Wednesday to Sunday 3 levels

Situated in nine acres of grounds, the Art Museum is home to a number of collections including British Pre Raphaelite, American Art, John Sloan, Howard Pile and a Copeland sculpture garden. The museum is open Wednesday to Saturday 10am to 4pm.

Sports and Hall of Fame Museum

The Sports Museum is located at Fawley Stadium on the Wilmington Riverfront. The museum exhibits memorabilia, uniforms and photographs of Delaware sports people. The museum is open April to October, Tuesday to Friday, noon to 5pm.
