Things to do with Young Children in Fairfield

From the shore to the lake, the nature trails to the Pequot Library annual book sale, Fairfield, CT is filled with fun places and fun activities for town children and visitors.

Take your little nature lover to the Connecticut Audubon Society and they’ll be sure to have a wonderful experience. Located at 2325 Burr Street, Fairfield, CT 06824, the center is open Tuesday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Closed Sundays and Mondays.

When the kids are through exploring nature trails, spotting tadpoles and watching birds and other wildlife in their natural habitat, they’ll enjoy a shopping trip in the Center at Fairfield Nature Store. Picture books and other items small children like are available for sale and help support the Audubon Society.

Stickers and passes are needed to park at the beaches and non residents should check with the recreation department about fees and rates before parking.

Fairfield is also home to the beautiful Lake Mohegan located at 960 Morehouse Highway, which offers more sand and water fun for children, but at a lakeside setting.

Swing sets, slides, tennis courts, baseball diamonds, and colorful jungle gyms can be found in every Fairfield neighborhood, either right next to an elementary school or in one of the areas designated as a town park.

Whether you’re a town resident or not you are very welcome to join in the fun at the Pequot Library’s annual book sale located at 720 Pequot Avenue. Usually held in the summer months, this is above and beyond the average library book sale.

Touted as the biggest book sale in Connecticut, the Pequot Library’s annual sale has no admission fee but lots of great activities especially suited for children. Face painting, musical entertainment, contests and dress up festivities will entertain your child while you get to browse at the hundreds and hundreds of books for sale. Peanut Butter Jam Session is a new, free activity for children held during the summer at the Sherman Green, Post Road and features interactive, musical performances chosen to delight and entertain children. Bring a peanut butter and jam sandwich or any picnic lunch and enjoy the outdoor fun. Shows begin at 12:30 pm and don’t stress out if it’s raining on a performance day. Peanut Butter Jam Session will be moved to the Penfield Pavilion on Fairfield Beach Road, so that the show goes on.

Fairfield Museum & History Center, 370 Beach Road, gives children a glimpse into the colonial times and offers camps, activities and exciting exhibits tailored to children’s interests.

Fairfield also hosts a variety of child-friendly restaurants, everything from a McDonalds with an indoor play area, to Joe’s American Bar and Grill, numerous pizza restaurants including the famed Pepe’s Pizzeria, located at 238 Commerce Drive.

Five beaches, one lake, a major wild life refuge, tons of areas to play a variety of sports, museums, movies, free concerts and kid friendly menus make Fairfield CT a wonderful place for young children to live or to visit.
