Hartford is the capital of the state of Connecticut. It has a lot to offer families and children and there are plenty of free things that are available to do this summer in the city. So if you are looking for free children’s activities in Hartford Ct, here are a few to get you started.

The Wadsworth Athenaeum  is the oldest public art museum in the country. It offers a variety of programs year round for families. One that it offers is Free Saturdays. From 10am to 1pm admission to the museum and the program is free. This is a great summer time activity but it is also offered year round. On the last Saturday in August 2010 there is will an additional program, there will be a 2pm to 3:30 screening of the children’s movie The Princess and the Frog.

The Hartford Public Library  is offering a variety of programs at a variety of different locations including free lunch for children at most branches. There are educational programs, computer lessons, story time and much more. Check the library website for all the details. Not all programs are offered at every branch and there are programs designed for specific age groups.

If you would like to give your children a free history lesson and a look at how our state government works, bring them to the state capital and take them wither on a self guided or guided tour. There is a lot to learn on these tours and you can include the Connecticut Hall of Fame in your visit. For more information about times and other practical information visit the state website.

The Museum of Connecticut History located in the Connecticut State Library is free every day of the year. In the summer time on a hot day it is a nice place to go to get away from the heat and also to learn about the history of Connecticut. If you want to add a little something more to your visit, there is a scavenger hunt that you can download and print before you visit.

Hartford was the home of the Colt Firearm Manufacturing Company. If your child loves guns, there is a wonderful collection of the firearms that were produced here over the years.

If you would rather be outdoors with your child, a visit to Bushnell Park and the wonderful carousel and arboretum is something that can provide hours of entertainment. You can also take a free tour of the Veterans Arch. Elizabeth park is a bit more subdued but has a phenomenal rose garden and free evening concert.

These are just some of the interesting and free things that kids can do in Hartford Ct in the summer.
