San Jose: Live music mecca

San Jose, California is a mecca of live music opportunities, with the great majority of concerts and shows taking place in downtown San Jose. There are also a wide range of clubs, bars, and coliseums situated in different neighborhoods of the city, including Mayfair, Blossom Valley, East Foothills, The Villas, and Ponderosa. San Jose is situated in a heavily populated area of California, the San Francisco Bay area, and it is a popular destination for those seeking entertainment. As the tenth largest city in the United States, San Jose has a huge population to entertain as well as a huge host of singer-songwriters and bands hoping to make it big.

Popular venues in downtown San Jose include the California Theater, the San Jose Civic Auditorium, the Blank Club, San Jose State University, the San Jose Events Center, the Theater on San Pedro Square, the Event Center Arena, the City Lights Theater, and many others. At the time of this article, many of these venues are offering holiday themed events, as well as a healthy dose of jazz. However, during the rest of the year, San Jose attracts huge stars like Taylor Swift, Jackson Browne, Britney Spears, Coldplay, and Madonna. There are also excellent opportunities for entertainment within a hour drive of San Jose, at San Francisco and Berkley. In early 2013 alone, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Taylor Swift, George Strait, Lady Gaga, Muse and Rihanna are expected to perform in the area.

San Jose has plenty of homegrown live music in addition to all of the immensely popular artists it attracts. Papa Doo Run Run is one of the world’s premier Beach Boys cover bands and has been performing for over 40 years. For fans of blues and zydeco, the Blues Box Bayou Band performs not too far away in Modesto, California. Bands perform nightly of any given genre, even Reggae music and Traditional African music. In addition, Motely Crue bassist Nikki Sixx hails from San Jose, as well as Primus and Guns N Roses drummer Bryan Mantia.

The HP Pavilion in San Jose in extremely active with events, the majority of which are musical events and sporting events. The Pavilion has sold more non-sporting event tickets than any other venue in the United States, and third in the world. The venue averages 184 events a year, or about one event every two days. There is always something great to listen to in San Jose.
