Historically, the Western Addition neighborhood in San Francisco, California, zip code 94115 was an addition to the city in the 1990’s. The area was served by cable cars and it was a middle class neighborhood that survived the 1906 earthquake pretty much intact. There are many different boundaries to the neighborhood but the current real estate maps define it as Geary Avenue to the north, Gough Street to the east, Divisadero Street to the west, and the southern border that includes Fillmore Street, McAllister Street, and Buchanan Street.

It appears that there are more parks and recreational opportunities in this neighborhood than anything else. Beideman and O’Farrell Mini Park is a shady oasis with benches and low rock walls for seating. The Raymond Kimbell Playground has a playground and a lawn area for kids and dogs to roam. The three baseball fields have artificial grass and there is a soccer field. The Hamilton Recreation Center has an indoor pool. Jefferson Square Park welcomes dogs. Margaret S. Hayward Playground has a playground, two tennis courts, two baseball fields, and two basketball courts. There is also the Rosa Parks Senior Center and the Ella Hill Hutch Community Center.

The community has undergone many changes. Many of the older Victorian homes were demolished to make room for lower income housing and during World War II, Japanese Americans who were sent to internment camps and came back to nothing. Today, the neighborhood has changed again and is solidly middle class. Geary Avenue separates the Western Addition from the more affluent Pacific Heights neighborhood. The neighborhood was redesigned by the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake that damaged the Central Freeway that ran through the area and it was demolished and rerouted.   

The single-family homes and multi-family dwelling are much more affordable here than in the surrounding areas. There are still Victorian homes but there are condos and apartments as well. There are many public schools in walking distance. Getting around the city is easy with the widely accessible public transportation system.

There are many places for shopping and dining scattered throughout the neighborhood and the Western Addition borders other neighborhoods with more places for boutique shopping and unique dining experiences. It is less than a mile to downtown San Francisco and just under three miles to Fisherman’s Wharf. Chinatown to the east and the Marina District to the north are less than two miles away. From shopping and dining to recreational activities in the area or seaside pursuits, nothing is far from the Western Addition neighborhood making it a good place to reside.
