How many times have we past one of those “Historical Marker” signs on the side of the road and wished they had the same kind of sign for other things? A “Celebrity Marker” sign that would point out where celebrities were born and where they went to school would be interesting. If you have a famous person who hales from your town, don’t you mention it to people you meet on vacation as a way of promoting your town? Take Phoenix, Arizona for instance. It’s the capital of Arizona, home of the Arizona Cardinal Football team, and has thousands of hiking and biking trails. Did you also know that many celebrities have called this southwest town home?

One of the Phoenix natural born celebrities who would deserve a “Celebrity Marker” is Lynda Carter, best know for her role on Wonder Woman. She began her career in small bands and even played in a band with a drummer named Gary Burghoff who played Radar O’Reilly on MASH. Lynda went on to win the Miss World USA competition in 1972 while representing her home state of Arizona. She’s been on the sitcom Hope & Faith, television drama Law & Order, and the 2005 motion picture Dukes of Hazzard. She has been on the big screen, television, and even had a successful run on stage.

Phoenix celebrity Dierks Bentley is one of country music’s brightest stars. The Academy of Country Music named him Top Male Vocalist of the Year in 2003 beating out some of the finest singers in country music. Dierks has had five number one singles on the US country charts and in October of 2005, he was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry as its youngest member at the time. He also broke many hearts at the end of 2005 when he married his high school sweetheart. Earlier that year he was awarded the Horizon Award at the CMA’s which is given to outstanding new artist with unlimited potential.

Another talented singer is Michelle Branch who was born seven weeks early in Phoenix on July 2, 1983. She got her big break after hearing news of a music manager touring the area and stole a neighbor’s golf cart to get a demo tape to him. There’s no doubt why he is still her manager, Michelle plays the guitar, accordion, cello, piano, and drums to go along with her incredible voice. She has gone on to perform at the Super-bowl, collaborated with Carlos Santana, and been awarded two Grammy’s. In 2004 Michelle posed for the cover of Maxim and was later listed as #20 on their top 100 list. She has performed songs on several movie soundtracks and also crossed over from pop into the country music genre.

Stevie Nicks the lead singer of Fleetwood Mac was also born in Phoenix on May 26, 1948. She’s been ranked as #14 on VH1’s 100 Greatest Women of Rock And Roll as well as being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998. Stevie has worked on numerous movie soundtracks, nominated for countless awards, and shows no signs of slowing down.

One of motor sports finest comes from Phoenix. J.J. Yeley was born on October 5, 1976. J.J. was the USAC Sprint Rookie of the Year in 1997 and has won two USAC Sprint Championships. In 2002 and 2003 was awarded as the USAC Silver Crown Champion as well as the Triple Crown winner in 2003. He has had six top ten finishes in NASCAR’s Sprint Cup and thirty-eight top tens in the NASCAR Nationwide Series. J.J. Yeley has participated in the Indianapolis 500 as well as four other Indy Racing League events. He currently drives the #96 for Hall of Fame Racing in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series which has two races each year at his home track in Phoenix.

Phoenix, Arizona gives us a little of every kind of entertainment. I’m sure the citizens of Phoenix are very proud of their natural born celebrities as well as all the ones that chose to move to their town. I’m just not to sure we’ll ever get those “Celebrity Marker” signs that we’d all love to see.
