Marathons in Huntsville Alabama

Huntsville, Alabama has several marathons each year to not only raise health awareness but raise money for charity as well. In fact, there is a marathon that takes place each month in Huntsville. Most of the marathons are hosted by the Huntsville Track Club. Simply visit their website and look for the HTC Race Calendar link on the left. You will also find many more marathons listed at the website that is not hosted by the Huntsville Track Club.

Mountain Mist 50k Run (January)

Mountain Mist is known as one of Alabama’s toughest trail runs. The start of the run begins in front of Monte Sano Lodge and goes a total distance of 31 miles, coming to an end at the back side of Monte Sano Lodge. This is a timed run with three checkpoints. If a participant doesn’t reach the check point by a certain time limit they are disqualified from the race. Registration is $50.00 before December and $60.00 during the month of December. Registration fees must be paid in advance. You could choose to pay an extra $10.00 to attend the Pre-Race dinner the night before. After the race, participant gather together for lunch at a local restaurant.

UAH Spring Road Race 10K (March)

Each March runners gather on the University of Alabama (UAH) campus at the University Fitness Center around 1:00pm for registration. The race begins at the fitness center and goes all the way to the Tom Bevill Center. Then runners turn around and run back to the fitness center. Pre-registration fee is $7.00 but students only have to pay $5.00. If you choose to register the day of the race, the registration fee is $10.00 with no student discount. All proceeds go to the Huntsville Dialysis Center.

MaKay Hollow Madness Trail Run (March)

Another marathon in March is atop Monte Sano Mountain. This is a 13.1 mile marathon that starts at 7:00pm on a Saturday and although there isn’t a time limit they prefer that runners take no longer than 5 hours. Registration fees vary from year to year but what stays consistant is that there is no registration the day of the race. All fees and forms must be turned in before the day of the race.

Cotton Row Run (May)

Since 1989, the Cotton Row Run has been a tradition for many residents. There are three marathons that occur on this chosen Saturday. The first race starts at 7:00am and is a 10k run. The second race starts at 9:00am and is only a 5k run. The third race is a 1-mile fun run for children and generally starts around 10:00am. Monetary awards are given to qualifying participants in the 10k race. Registration fees for the 10k and 5k range from $12.00 to $30.00 depending on when you register. The Fun Run registration fees range from $8.00 to $15.00.

Alabama A&M 10K Road Race (June)

Each year Alabama Agricultural and Mechanics University (Alabama A & M) is host to marathon on the second Saturday in June. The race starts at 7:30am and begins at the University’s Old Gym. For more information, contact Mike Greene at (256) 859-4369.

HTC Twilight 5K and Men’s 5k Runs (July)

Hosted by the Huntsville Track Club and the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH), participants meet at UAH’s Spragins Hall on the third Saturday of July. The race begins at 7:30 in the morning so it is advised to arrive early. For more information you can contact David and Ashley Cain at (256) 533-9977.

HiWAAY Huntsville Sprint Triathlon

There are three parts to this annual triathlon. The race starts at the Huntsville Cross Country Running Park, running a total of 3 miles. The second part of the race is riding a bicycle for 6 miles from the park to the Natatorium. The last part is swimming eight lengths of the 50 meter pool. After the race you will receive a T-shirt and refreshments. Registration fees range from $8.00 to $40.00. For more information on the Triathlon date, times, rules, and more, visit the website.

Autumn Chase Run (September)

Each year since1982, children have come out to the Jaycee’s Building to experience the health benefits and joys of running. The run is a mile long and each child receives a T-shirt and a ribbon commemorating their accomplishment. Awards are handed out to the first 15 students to finish the run. The run is open to all children in preschool to the eighth grade. There is even a special run for the faculty of various local schools. Children are separated per grade and gender with different start times.

Liz Hurley Ribbon Run (October)

After Liz Hurley, a local anchor woman, won her battle with breast cancer, she has organized this event with Huntsville Hospital to help raise awareness. Not only is the run set up to raise awareness but to raise money for the Liz Hurley Breast Cancer Fund which helps in breast cancer research, purchasing equipment, and much more. Over $1 million have been raised but more is needed to purchase state of the art equipment and help research procedures that will help in early detection and treatment.

The registration fee for participants is $15.00. There are three runs organized with this marathon. First is the Men’s 5k Race which start at 8:00am. The next run is the Women’s 5k Race which starts at 9:00am. The last run is a Survivor’s Walk which starts at 10:00am.

HELPLine Turkey Trot (November)

Before you fill up on a turkey dinner this Thanksgiving, consider working off the meal before you eat. Each year the Crisis Services of North Alabama hosts this marathon to help raise money for services that are important to the community. The run begins at UAH’s Spragins Hall with a registration fee of $20.00. They even host a run for the smaller children.

Rocket City Marathon (December)

Since 1976, each year during the second Saturday of December participants gather for a 26.2 mile run through the city of Huntsville. Registration begins in June and is only $50.00 through the month of September. Registration in October is $60.00. November registration is $70.00. After December 1st, registration is $85 and there will be no registration after December 15th.

There are also many other marathons throughout the year. Whether the Huntsville Track Club hosts a marathon or not, they still list all of the marathons in the area as well as others around the country.
