A Guide to the Bayside Neighborhood in Mobile Al

Mobile, Alabama is located on the Gulf of Mexico.  Mobile Bay connects the city with the gulf. Bayside is on the west shore of the bay on Hollinger Island. It is at the far reaches of the city of Mobile a good distance from downtown, approximately 15 miles. Actually, the center of Theodore at four miles away  is much closer than the center of Mobile.

The neighborhood has a rural feel with mostly single family homes, the majority of homes are single level homes in either a ranch style or bungalow styles.  The streets in the area are narrow streets.    Bayside is a good size neighborhood geographically with a population of slightly over a thousand  according to city-data. There are homes dating from as far back as the 1930’s up to the current date.  Some of the homes on the bay are available for vacation rental.

The median income of this neighborhood is higher than Mobile in general by about $10,000 with an average of around $45,000. This is a family friendly area with lots of people in their 30’s and 40’s and about 2/3 of the residents are Alabama natives. There is a small percentage of elderly and the very young.  Hollinger Island Elementary School is located in this neighborhood.  It is a high performing school that has received a 7/10 on the standardized state tests for 2011. Children from grades K-5 attend the school which is within walking distance of the area’s beaches which makes for some interesting field trips.

There are several marinas in this neighborhood where boating in the bay is a very important part of the recreational activities of residents. One of them is Sundowner Marina which can accommodate 75 boats with a length of up to 70 feet.

This is an area that has job possibilities nearby. The Theodore Industrial Park has a variety of employment opportunities   including the Mitsubishi Polysilicon American Corporation. The Alabama State Port Authority has a facility on the bay in the southern section of the Bayside neighborhood.

The four and a half mile drive into downtown Theodore is one that residents will have to make to get most services that they will want. High School students will most likely attend Theodore High School and Katherine H.  Hankins Middle School is also in Theodore. There is grocery shopping at the Winn Dixie and Jimmy Lowe’s Fruit Stand.

There are some local shops, restaurants, bars and other businesses. Leather Hut has a great selection of leather items, stylish jackets for both men and women, hats, bags, belts and more. When residents are looking for a special gift or just for something special Betty Jo’s Gift Shop is the place they have gone to since 1966.

Bayside is a quiet area of single family homes. It is convenient to Theodore and from there to Interstate 10 to get into downtown Mobile.
